The wood-block prints
collaborated and made by
Brangwyn and Urushibara

Oct. 4 (Thu) - Nov. 20 (Tue) 2012

Since 'Yoshijiro Urushibara and Brangwyn exhibition' which were held two years ago at the treasure hall in Mishima-Taisha acquired popularity, we take close-up on collaborated wood-block prints between two persons, and we exhibit them again in our art gallery this time.

Yoshijiro Urushibara was born in 1889 Tokyo. In order to introduce wood-block print technology in a Japanese-English exposition (London) in 1910, he passed into Britain, and he was engaged in restoration of a prints and pictures, and reproduction as part-time engagement of the British Museum afterwards.Princess Mary and Prime Minister Churchill liked and collected Urushihara's original flower and scenery wood-block prints.
Painter Frank B‚’angwyn was born in 1867 Bourges. he was fascinated with the wood-block print technique in which Urushibara excelled. Then two persons' joint work started and left outstanding wood-block prints such as a masterpiece 'Poetic Pictures Collection Bruges'. He is famous also for having been greatly concerned with the Matsukata collection. It is new in memory that the exhibition 'Frank Brangwyn' was held as a 50th anniversary of the National Museum of Western Art in 2010 Japan.
As compared with Picasso, Chagall and etc. who has many prints which appear on the market in large quantity all over the world, Urushibara and Brangwyn's prints are valuable, because there are a few numbers. They are possessed by many art museums such as the British Museum, the Smithsonian Sackler Gallery , and the Tokyo National Museum.

The Brangwyn's touch like wave and Urushibara's bold and precise technique to engrave and print has united wonderfully. We introduce about 50 works by a unique collaboration of the British and the Japanese.
