Great printer Delatre's world

Dec. 6 (Thu) - Jan. 27 (Sun) 2013

Although we introduced a noted wood-block printer Urushibara Yoshijiro last time, we introduce this time a noted copperplate printer Auguste Delatre in France from the second half of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century.

Delatre was born in 1822 Paris. The encounter with Charles-Emile Jacque determined his life. Jacque initiated the young and able printer into the technique of a sketch and copperplate prints. Delatre founded the print studio by making Jacque into a guarantor in 1843. Some painters Bracquemond, Meryon, Whistler, Haydon, etc. heard the his rumor and visited the studio of independent Delatre. The studio became a haunt of the artists who search for a new expression of copperplate prints in it. It was soon connected to establishment of 'The Society of Etchers' in 1862 and the renaissance of the copperplate prints in the second half of the 19th century.
The printing by Delatre heightened the expressive power of the work more than imagination of the painter who requested, and created the screen with a deep taste. The print in which the tunes of printing differ for every work was going to ask the world as a result that Delatre's print was not "printed matter" but independent "art work" of each other. However, those who objected to the performance of the advanced work which exceeded expectation soon appeared, and their candid advice managed to erase the name of Delatre from history. The unfortunate printer closed his whole life in 1907 for 85 years in Montmartre loved throughout life.

We introduce about 20 masterpieces printed by Delatre. Please view.
